Obviously Mr Gray was upset and bewildered by the decision to ask him to leave. The 71 year old committed smoker had been hooked on tobacco for years and was a regular 30 a day user. He gave up just over 4 months ago, and turned instead to the electric cigarette to help with his nicotine addiction. What surprised him the most is that he regularly uses his e-cig in other pubs and restaurants around Leicester: he even used in in the pub he was ejected from and happily smokes it on the bus en route to the pub each time he goes out. He has never once been challenged before about his habit.   Speaking to the local paper, Mr Gray commented:

“I was just having a quiet pint and using the cigarette when a member of staff told me I would have to go outside. I was a bit bemused because the thing doesn’t produce any smoke. I thought she was joking at first and then I realised she was deadly serious. I asked her why I couldn’t use it and she told me it was because it encouraged other people to smoke. I think that’s a ridiculous policy.”

Mr Gray then argued his case with a manager, but to no avail. He subsequently left the pub and has vowed never to return. Wetherspoon’s said that electronic cigarettes had been banned from its chain since the ban on smoking in public places was introduced in 2007. The justification for the blanket ban is that staff were simply too busy to determine whether or not customers were smoking real cigarettes. Company spokesman Eddy Gershon said: 

"When the ban came in, lots of people were using these devices in our pubs. Many of them looked a lot like real cigarettes and it was causing problems for our staff determining whether they were real or not. I’m sorry if this was upsetting for the customer but it is the rule we are using, and it’s the rule we’re sticking to."

A Leicester City Council spokesperson said anyone using the electronic cigarette would not be fined as the products could be legally smoked anywhere. However, he also said it was up to the premises owner whether or not they allowed the use of the devices.

So which celebrity started the ball rolling and was the first to come out and openly use an electric cigarette in public? Well, that’s the $64,000 question. The time-frame is unclear. Some claim it was Katherine Heigl, or Izzy from Gray’s Anatomy as she’s better known: she swore her allegiance to the e-cig when she smoked one publicly on the Letterman Show on live U.S.TV. Others maintain it was Charlie Sheen who publicly endorsed the e-cigarette. Sheen can rightly take credit for lots of things, many of which are slightly dubious, and he has after all invested in an electronic cigarette company himself: but was he the first? The truth is we just don’t know. Celebrities on both sides of the Atlantic have been keen to switch to the safer smoking alternative, and who can blame them after all?  

Joining the growing list of celebrity vapers have been Leonardo Di Caprio, Kevin Federline, ex-husband of Britney Spears and celebrity by default, Dennis Quaid, Lindsay Lohan, Eric Roberts, John Cusack and Johnny Depp. On this side of the pond we’ve seen our own celebrity vapers too: Kate Moss is partial to the occasional one, as are, Jimmy White, Matt Cardle, Catherine Zeta Jones and June Alexander. Rock and roll hasn’t escaped the draw of the e-cig either. Ronnie Wood, Eddie Van Halen, Tom Petty and even Pete Docherty have been spotted taking a hit on their favourite e-cigarette recently.

Why is this important you’re probably asking? Well, it’s important because to the best of our knowledge every one of these celebrities made the decision to switch to electronic cigarettes voluntarily because they acknowledged the fact that the product was safer and healthier for them. None of these celebrities was sponsored to promote a particular product. They, like the rest of us, know a good thing when they see one. These celebrities have made positive choices, and have stopped using tobacco-based cigarettes because they are dangerous and can be lethal. If by choosing to make the switch to e-cigarettes celebrities persuade some of their fans to join them, then that can only be a good thing, can’t it? Let’s hear it for the much-maligned celebrity. We never thought we’d be praising them for carrying out a public service.

Making rash promises is easy, but delivering on those promises is another matter entirely. That’s why you’ll never find Freshcig making promises that we know are impossible to keep. Although we believe in our electronic cigarettes, we won’t claim that smoking them will help you to give up tobacco. Now obviously if you do manage to quit for good after using our products, then we’d be delighted. But we have to be honest and say it doesn’t work like that. Electric cigarettes are not sold as smoking cessation devices: they’re sold as the safer alternative product for those smokers who wish to continue to smoke. They’re safer because they do not contain tobacco and are not ignited. If you’re a little disappointed by that, then here’s a bit of news that might cheer you up a bit: e-cigs might not be smoking cessation devices, but there are at least 10 good reasons why you should make the switch none the less.

• No smoke and therefore no tar are produced.
• E-cigs do not contain carbon monoxide, nitrosamines and formaldehyde.

• No second-hand smoke is produced by a Freshcig as they are not ignited.
• It’s generally legal to smoke electric cigarettes anywhere in the UK.
• Electronic cigarettes are up to 70 percent cheaper than tobacco-based cigarettes.
• E-cigarettes look and feel the same as a cigarette, but with none of the harmful side effects.

We could go on at length of course and give you many other reasons why making the switch to our products is one of the best decisions you’ll ever make, but we wouldn’t want to spoil all the fun you’ll have in finding this out for yourself. Take it from us; you really can’t get too much of a good thing. What we can guarantee is that once you’ve made the switch to Freshcig’s electronic cigarette, then you’ll never look back. You won’t need tobacco when you’ve got a Freshcig.

Most of us are definitely up to speed about smoking, and are aware of the damage it can do to the body. We know that smokers are more likely to develop lung and other cancers, and suffer from heart attacks and high blood pressure. The odd thing is we take this information in and accept it as the gospel truth, even though all of the acknowledged dangers are actually taking place inside the body where we can’t see them. What makes it even odder is that we tend to ignore the obvious, and pay little attention to the damage that tobacco smoke is doing to our skin, even though the signs are staring us in the face as it were.

Smoking ages you

Tobacco smoke is as harmful for the skin as sun damage or ‘hard living’ and can add years to your appearance. According to Dr Nicholas Perricone, a dermatologist, and author of the Perricone Prescription, the long-term effects of smoking are significant in terms of premature ageing. One single inhalation of tobacco smoke is enough to release more than a million free radicals, which then gather in the lungs and can trigger an inflammatory response which will circulate throughout the body.

In 1985 the term ‘smoker’s face’ was added to the medical dictionary and is now part of popular currency. If you can’t picture it immediately think of a rocker like Ronnie Wood, and the image should become a little clearer. Having a smoker’s face makes you much look much older than your years: lines and wrinkles appear on the face, particularly around the upper and lower lips and corners of the eyes. Deep lines can also form on the cheeks, as well as numerous shallower lines on the cheeks and lower jaw. The general demeanour of a smoker is a grey and gaunt. The features take on a distinct gaunt appearance and underlying bone structures appear to be more prominent.

Smoking depletes the collagen in the skin

Cigarette smoke contains more than 4000 toxins and harmful chemicals, many of which are absorbed directly into the bloodstream and are then transmitted by the blood into the skin's structures. Smoking also causes the blood vessels in the top layers of the skin to constrict, thus thickening and reducing the oxygen levels in the blood. This also reduces the levels of collagen in the skin, and the levels of elasticity.

Smoking thins the skin

A smoker's skin is normally thinner due to poor circulation, and there are usually visible signs of premature ageing. Lines and wrinkles become more prominent and established. A recent study of twins at St Thomas’ Hospital looked at 25 pairs of identical twins, where 1 twin was a lifelong smoker and the other twin was a non smoker. Using an ultrasound technology to gauge the thickness of the skin, the study revealed that the smoker's skin was 25 percent thinner than that of the non-smoker. In certain areas of the body this differential increased to around 40 percent.

You are what you smoke

In spite of all the information about how tobacco smoking ages the skin and can make us look older than we actually are, it has to be acknowledged that not everybody wants to give up their habit. Some people enjoy smoking, even if they don’t appreciate the price they might have to pay in terms of appearance. For those people there is now a product available that might just be the answer they have been looking for - the electronic cigarette. Electric cigarettes, like Freshcig’s e-cig, only contain nicotine and water vapour. They are absolutely free from all the other harmful chemicals that are found in tobacco smoke. So if you want to continue to smoke, but have no desire to look an ageing rocker in the years to come, then maybe now’s the time to make the switch to the safer alternative.

Every adolescent grows up idolising one rock guitarist or other. It’s got to be in the genes, because it happens with every generation. Hendrix and Clapton were the heroes of the sixties kids, Rory Gallagher and Jimmy Page dominated the seventies, whilst Stevie Vie and Eddie Van Halen carried the torch in the eighties. We put these people on a pedestal and look up to them.  Yet, it’s odd that we tend to think of these people as immortal, when in truth they’re no different than the rest of us. They have their ups and downs, and aren’t immune from illness and ageing. So it was sad to hear of the troubles of eighties legend Eddie Van Halen’s illness. The rock guitarist has been suffering with cancer. Thankfully he now appears to have recovered. After undergoing several operations, Eddie is now recovering thanks to the help of family and friends and the switch to electronic cigarettes.

Eddie Van Halen has struggled with alcoholism in the past. He blames his problems to some extent on his father who encouraged him to drink and smoke from an early age to ease his nerves before performing on stage.  The alcohol and tobacco certainly seemed to do the trick at first, but he soon became addicted to both.  Van Halen, who wrote the classic tracks, ‘And the cradle will rock’, ‘Jump’ and ‘Finish what ya started’ is now 57 and appears to be well on the road to recovery. He gave up alcohol after realising he was an alcoholic, but found giving up tobacco-based cigarettes tougher. Fortunately he discovered e-cigarettes, but not until it was nearly too late.

Speaking to Esquire Magazine in his dressing room after a recent show, Van Halen described how cancer had affected his life, and how he was able to overcome at least one of his addictions by switching to electric cigarettes. Seeming relaxed Van Halen took a long draw on his e-cig and explained to the journalist that in 2000 he felt a callus on his tongue; a patch of dead skin caused, he assumed, by the way he chewed his food or from chewing on his custom copper pick while standing in a studio filled with electromagnetic waves. What he never assumed was that he had cancer and that the callous was caused by countless cigarettes, and the abuse of alcohol and cocaine. The doctors removed a piece of his tongue, shaped like the end of his pick, and gave him treatment for his cancer.  He gave up the alcohol and drug abuse, but continued to smoke. The treatment was successful, and he remained cancer-free until last year, when he got hit twice. In spring, doctors found cancer cells in his throat and took a scalpel to them. Last autumn, the cancer returned and the doctors were forced to remove another piece of his tongue. Thankfully he has remained in remission since then.

It was only when the cancer returned that Van Halen realised he needed to give up smoking tobacco. He was then introduced to electronic cigarettes, and has successfully managed to stay smoke-free since then. In spite of the damage done by tobacco to his health, the rock legend found quitting one of the hardest things he ever had to do. He missed the routine of smoking and the buzz he got from the experience. Patches and NRT could not replace that experience. Then he was given an electric cigarette, and discovered that he could still enjoy smoking in the way he used to, whilst remaining safer and healthier. He hasn’t looked back since.

If you’ve ever considered the possibility of giving up tobacco-based cigarettes or switching to a safer alternative like electronic cigarettes, then the findings of a recent report might just help to make your mind up for you. We all know that smoking causes cancer and can also be responsible for heart disease and high blood pressure, but it now appears that smoking can also make you depressed too. The study found that approximately half of the people who were diagnosed as having depression were smokers who used tobacco-based cigarettes.

The study found that:

• Half of depressed women aged 20 to 39 smoked.
• Forty-three percent of depressed women between 40 and 54 smoked.
• Forty-three percent of depressed adults over 20 smoked.
• Over half of depressed men aged 40 to 54 were current smokers.
  
  

Why could smoking tobacco cause depression? Well, unfortunately that question was not answered, so further studies will need to be conducted. However, what is known is that tobacco smoke contains 4,000 chemicals, and 69 of these are known to cause cancer. Some of the chemicals are highly volatile, including: carbon monoxide which can kill if you breathe enough of it, arsenic, hydrogen cyanide (a gas chamber poison), methoprene (a pesticide), freon (which damages the earth's ozone layer), tar, formaldehyde (used to preserve dead bodies), butane (cigarette lighter fuel), and cyanide.

Cigarette smoke also contains lead and cadmium - and both of these heavy metals are strongly correlated with depression. Lead in the body is infamous for its ability to damage the brain and nervous system. It's also connected with having a lower IQ. Cadmium is also known to damage the brain and nervous system, and cause disease in the liver and kidneys. Both of these metals build up inside the bodies of smokers and unless steps are taken to remove them, they'll remain inside long after the exposure has stopped. The lead in cigarettes has a half-life of over 22 years. Cigarette smoke also contains radioactive polonium. Lead and polonium end up in cigarettes from the phosphate fertilizers that the tobacco industry regularly uses. According to the EPA, lead and polonium pass into the lungs of smokers where they can accumulate in very high concentrations. By mass, the polonium in cigarette smoke is about 250,000 times more toxic than hydrogen cyanide.

Some have suggested that the key to curing the problem of depression lies in the use of anti-depressants like Prozac. However, such suggestions seem counter-intuitive. If the ingestion of dangerous chemicals can potentially cause depression, then ingesting even more chemicals will almost certainly make the problem worse. A far better solution would be to switch to a product like the electric cigarette. E-cigs only contain nicotine. They do not contain any of the other chemicals that are found in tobacco. Nicotine is not known to be harmful, certainly not if taken in measured doses. There is no guarantee that if smokers use e-cigarettes they will be able to quit for good. Some smokers do find the process easy, but that is probably more down to will power and determination. What can be guaranteed is that by using electronic cigarettes, smokers can indulge their habit if a safer and healthier way.

What do you really know about Hollywood actor John Cusack? Well, most people will be aware that he's very picky when it comes to choosing which films he features in. He's starred in some cult Hollywood films like High Fidelity, Grosse Pointe Blank, The Sure Thing and Say Anything, but he's never been what you would describe as a mainstream actor. The reason for this is probably down to personality. Cusack has always been ambivalent about the acting profession, and has veered away from roles that he believes would put him in a genre pigeon hole. He's his own man, and will only ever choose to do what 'he' wants to do. If ever proof were needed of the fact, then you need look no further than his refusal to accept a lucrative commercial offer from the late Apple supremo, Steve Jobs, and his fierce advocacy of the electronic cigarette.

Cusack has just finished filming the pseudo-slasher film, The Raven, in which he takes the title role of Edgar Allen Poe. He was recently interviewed by ABC at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles. Dressed all in black, Cusack addressed the issue of his reluctance to accept mainstream roles whilst puffing enthusiastically on an electric cigarette. When asked why he choose to use e-cigs rather than traditional tobacco-based cigarettes, the actor replied that he preferred them and that he also got quite a kick out of lighting up in public places, and 'smoking' in so-called 'no-smoke' areas. He liked the devilment of it all, stating:

"I gave up cigarettes 8 years ago, but I like to smoke. So I smoke electronic cigarettes. I especially like to smoke these in restaurants to freak people out. After all, it's just water vapour that's produced."

Cusack was offered a very lucrative job offer from Apple boss, Steve Jobs, shortly after the release of High Fidelity in 2000. He was asked to make a commercial for the iPod which was due to be released in 2001. He was flown down to Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California, on Jobs' private jet. The Apple boss asked him to advertise the revolutionary new music device, playing his High Fidelity character, Rob Gordon. Cusack turned down the role as he wasn't interested in doing commercials. He still holds true to this principle today.

Did he have any regrets in hindsight, considering the impact the iPod went on to make? Naturally, he now realises he missed a golden opportunity, but Cusack is a determined character and will only do what he believes in, as his commitment to e-cigarettes proves. Never the less, he realises that things might well have been different if he'd accepted the offer:

"I just said, 'I don't want to do a commercial at the time, but now that I think about it, if I was ever to do a commercial that should have been the one. It was so cool that he was a fan of the movie. But here's the thing. He showed me the template, their rollout plans, iTunes before it was out — and I still didn't buy Apple stock! That's how stupid I am."

He may have missed out on a small fortune, but here at Freshcig we would never consider John Cusack to be stupid. He's made the switch to the safer electronic cigarette, which tells us he's actually got his head screwed on.

So what evidence is this claim based on? Well, the findings were presented by the highly-respected organisation, the British Psychological Society at its annual conference on April 18 at the Grand Connaught Rooms in London. 

Dr Lynne Dawkins of the University of East London conducted the research on 85 regular smokers (men and women). They were randomly given an e-cigarette with either nicotine or a placebo, or told to just hold the e-cigarette without using it. After five minutes of unrestricted use of the 'cigarette' participants completed a cravings and mood questionnaire. They repeated the questionnaire a further 20 minutes later. 60 of the participants also completed a working memory task 10-15 minutes after using the e-cigarette.

The results showed that the e-cig with nicotine helped men more than women in terms of reducing their cravings and improving their mood. The placebo electronic cigarette was just as good as the one containing nicotine, but only for women. Those tested for working memory revealed that electric cigarettes with nicotine helped both men and women maintain working memory compared to those in the other groups.

Dr Dawkins explained the rationale behind the research:

"We were interested in exploring the effectiveness of e-cigarettes as relatively little research has been done. In terms of reducing cravings it is interesting to note the difference in effectiveness for men and women.”

"Perhaps more significantly, we found that e-cigarettes with nicotine help maintain working memory in smokers who have not smoked for an hour or two. People who choose to stop smoking without using a nicotine substitute may therefore suffer a period during which their working memory levels dip until their bodies adjust to the reduced levels of nicotine. Electronic cigarettes seem to be effective at reducing this problem for men and women. However, in this study we did not look at the issue of whether people feel self-conscious about using the devices in public."

The study, conducted by researchers at University College London, used sample data from 5099 men and 2137 women. The information had previously been collected on Civil Service employees. The researchers evaluated data from the civil service records that included three cognitive assessments, collected over a 10 year period, and data on smoking status, collected over 25 years. The findings of the research clearly revealed that men who smoked suffered a significantly greater decline in cognitive ability than those who were non-smokers. What’s more, the research demonstrated that cognitive decline was greater if men continued to smoke into the follow up period. The study also concluded that there was no similar link between smoking in women and a decrease in cognitive ability. Researchers could not adequately explain why there should be such a difference, but one possible explanation posited by researchers was that the reason was possibly that women may smoke fewer cigarettes than men.

In a statement released to accompany the new study, one senior researcher commented:  “Finally, our results show that the association between smoking and cognition, particularly at older ages, is likely to be underestimated owing to higher risk of death and dropout among smokers.”

A number of other studies into the causes of dementia have been undertaken recently as the number of dementia sufferers in the country continues to grow. There is concern that the increase in the number of dementia patients is disproportionately large. Government officials have wondered whether the increase could be attributable to external environmental factors like smoking. Many of these studies seem to show a link between smoking cigarettes and a reduction in cognitive functionality. It has been suggested that it is the harmful chemicals and toxins in tobacco-based cigarette smokers that are largely responsible for the rise in dementia. Some scientists believe that if smokers were to switch to safer alternative forms of nicotine replacement like patches and electronic cigarettes then many of these problems might be alleviated. Electric cigarettes do not contain tar or carbon monoxide, and crucially are free from all the carcinogenic compounds found in tobacco-based cigarettes.

When any new and seemingly-untested product comes along, there’s a temptation to ban it first and only start to ask questions later. This is especially true with new products like the electronic cigarette. Some people have questioned whether these might potentially have an effect on the user’s health. However, just because you’re unsure of a new product, that’s no reason to ban it outright or seek to demonise it as some organisations suggest we should do. Fortunately, here in the UK we’re pretty lucky, though not all smokers might necessarily agree with that. The UK government has taken a very relaxed view about electric cigarettes. The nudge unit, a government-backed think tank, has in fact positively encouraged it as a means to allow people to wean themselves away from tobacco-based products and smoke safer alternatives. The same unfortunately can’t be said for other countries.

In Canada bizarrely, e-cigarettes can only be legally sold if the e-liquid in the cigarette contains no nicotine imported from outside the country. Canada is not alone either: there are a handful of other countries with similar restrictions and even some countries where e-cigs are banned altogether. America was one such country, but there is now a new impetus to look afresh at some of its more radical policies. Take the American city of Springfield, Missouri.

The authorities there brought in severe smoking restrictions last year which included a complete ban on the use of electronic cigarettes in public places. The vapers of Springfield were understandably annoyed, and joined with other e-cig users around the state to petition their leaders to reconsider the decision. The protest led to a referendum to repeal the ban, and now the Council is considering modifying the existing law to exclude electronic cigarettes. This will mean that e-cig users will be able to vape just as freely in Springfield as we do in any UK city.

In the Netherlands, electronic cigarettes were banned for import or sale by that country’s government last December. Yet a judge has since reversed that decision, citing problems and contradictions with the law. E-cigarette users in the Netherlands are free to use their devices in public, and can now purchase them at home or have them imported.  Switzerland appeared to have little problem with the concept of the electronic cigarette in itself. Where there was a problem, however, was that the government decided that the e-cig should be taxed at the same rate as tobacco-based cigarettes. The obvious problem here was that the financial incentive to switch to a safer and cheaper alternative was completely undermined. Fortunately Swiss officials have now reversed that decision, so that electric cigarettes and other smokeless nicotine products are now exempt from taxation:  the rationale being that it was far better to promote their use as a means of reducing tobacco-related deaths, than to continue receiving a limited amount of tax revenue.

Perhaps vapers should remember the words of one of our former prime ministers, Harold Macmillan, and possibly accept that we, electronic cigarette smokers have never had it so good.

The November 2010 study, which was conducted in 192 countries, concluded passive smoking is particularly dangerous for children, who are said to be at higher risk of sudden infant death syndrome, pneumonia and asthma. Passive smoking has also been linked to heart disease, respiratory illness and lung cancer. According to Armando Peruga the leader of the World Health Organisation’s Tobacco-Free Initiative, the study helps medical professionals to fully understand the full role that tobacco plays in people’s everyday lives.

The study used estimates of the incidence of specific diseases and of the number of people exposed to second-hand smoke in particular areas. The global health body said it was particularly concerned about the estimated 165,000 children who die of smoke-related respiratory infections, mostly in South East Asia and in Africa. It discovered that this particular group was more exposed to passive smoking than any other group, principally in their own homes:

"The mix of infectious diseases and second-hand smoke is a deadly combination," Mr Peruga claimed.

As well as being at increased risk of a series of respiratory conditions, the lungs of children who breathe in passive smoke may also develop more slowly than those children who grow up in smoke-free homes. The researchers found that as many as 40 percent of children, 33 percent of non-smoking men and 35 percent non-smoking women were exposed to second-hand smoke worldwide in 2004. This exposure was estimated to have caused 379,000 deaths from heart disease, 165,000 from lower respiratory infections, 36,900 from asthma and 21,400 from lung cancer.

According to the statistics, the highest numbers of people exposed to second-hand smoke are in Europe and Asia, whilst the lowest rates of exposure were in the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean and Africa. The research also found that passive smoking had a disproportionately large impact on women, killing about 281,000 worldwide. This has been attributed to the fact that in many parts of the world women are at least 50 percent more likely to be exposed to second-hand smoke than men. However, the researchers accepted that there were certain limitations to the study, including uncertainties about the underlying health data and gaps in the data relating to exposure to second-hand smoke.

Writing in the Lancet, Dr Heather Wipfli of the University of Southern California and colleagues, commented:

 
"There are well acknowledged uncertainties in estimates of disease burden. However, there can be no question that the 1.2 billion smokers in the world are exposing billions of non-smokers to second-hand smoke, a disease-causing indoor air pollutant."

Studies like these should quite rightly make those of us who smoke tobacco-based cigarettes question what we are doing, and considering whether our behaviour might be having a detrimental effect on the health of others. The government is keen to hammer the message home too, that passive smoking is harmful, particularly for children. The recent hard-hitting advertisements about passive smoking have advised parents not to smoke indoors or in vehicles where children are present. Perhaps another suggestion might have been to put forward a safer alternative to cigarettes, like the electronic cigarette. Electric cigarettes contain nicotine, and nicotine alone. E-cigs don’t contain tar, carbon monoxide, benzene and other carcinogenic compounds. E-cigarettes are safe to smoke indoors as they do not produce smoke, and therefore cannot contribute to passive smoking. If you wish to continue to smoke, but value the health of those around you, then there’s never been a better time to make the switch. Electronic cigarettes will satisfy your cravings, and guarantee that your family remains safe from harm.

The number of people smoking tobacco-based cigarettes started to fall in the 1970s, and continued right through to the 1990s: smoking rates fell sharply from nearly a half to under a quarter, when greater evidence of the harmful health effects of smoking became known.  Currently just over a fifth of adults smoke, and that figure has remained pretty much static for the last decade. Such statistics will obviously worry the government, as it is committed to driving down numbers. What will probably worry it even more is a new report from the Office of National Statistics which claims that although 63 percent of smokers say they wish to quit, the majority of the 13,000 smokers questioned fall at the very first hurdle and struggle to even manage to go a day without lighting up.

The issue for the government has not changed in the last decade. It has to get its message across and convince hard-core smokers that it is in their interests to quit. However, simply providing information and advice doesn’t work. There remains a committed group of smokers who are either not listening to the information, or simply ignoring the warnings. That’s why successive administrations introduced far-reaching legislation to discourage smoking through smoking bans in public places and the introduction of warning labels on cigarette packets. The latest initiative in the strategy to control tobacco use is the targeting of tobacco marketing, by banning the open and public advertising of tobacco products in major supermarkets. Advisers have suggested that such a move will lead to a reduction in the number of children taking up smoking, and will positively discourage older smokers from indulging their habit. Smaller retailers will have to comply with the rules by 2015. The government and Ash are further proposing that in the future all tobacco products should be sold in plain packaging. Leaving aside the fact that these two latest measures are contradictory and will inevitably cancel each other out, the question that remains is will this latest initiative work? Can a government ever introduce adequate measures to control smoking?

The short answer to that is yes. If the government really wanted to stop everyone smoking, it could do one of two things. It could either ban tobacco and make it illegal to use, or it could make the cost of a packet of cigarettes so extortionately expensive that no one could afford to buy them. Now some people might argue that we are quickly reaching that point anyway. But the thing is neither of these options would work and certainly neither would be popular. Some people will continue to smoke regardless of what politicians and medical professionals tell them. They are addicted and will do whatever it takes to get their nicotine fix.

So, is that the end of the matter then? Well actually no, it isn’t. There is another alternative solution available to those people who are addicted to tobacco and nicotine. You don’t have to ban cigarettes or make them prohibitively expensive: it’s far more preferable to choose the better and safer option – the electronic cigarette.

If ever proof were needed that an addiction to nicotine can be long-lasting, then you need look no further than rock musician Ronnie Wood. Wood, the Rolling Stones and Faces guitarist, has spent well over 40 years in the industry, and sadly the days of 24 hour partying have taken their toll.  He’s been perfectly open in the past about the various addictions that have blighted his life, like the addiction to alcohol and non-prescription drugs, but has somehow managed to turn his life around and said goodbye to his bad old ways. The only addiction that now remains is smoking. Is he about to put that one to bed too? Well, according to the Daily Mail he certainly appears to be making an attempt.

Wood, along with fellow rocker, Kelly Jones of the Stereophonics, was pictured outside the London Arts Club last week, after performing a duet earlier that night at the Teenage Cancer Trust. Now you may wonder why that should make the headlines. Well, according to the Mail it’s because he was seen smoking an electronic cigarette outside the club and certainly seemed to be enjoying the experience. Now that to the paper is evidence of the new clean-cut Ronnie Wood: the one who is determined to quit smoking.  Unfortunately he was then seen smoking the real deal later on and was pictured with his tobacco-based cigarette.  The paper mistakenly reported that this lapse was evidence that the old rocker either didn’t want to give up, or if he did, he didn’t have the necessary willpower and determination to succeed. Unfortunately, as has often been proved to be the case, the Daily Mail was barking up the wrong tree.

Electric cigarettes have never been sold as a tool to quit smoking. They are not medically licensed in the same way as NRT patches and gums are, and can therefore not be sold or marketed as quitting devices. Some of you may have read or seen on the news that the South African government has banned the sale of electronic cigarettes. From now on e-cigarettes and related nicotine substitute products will have to be prescribed by doctors. This may apparently take up to two years and will then be subject to a charge of $40 per prescription. Naturally vapers in South Africa are up in arms about the change, and there have been many concerns expressed that similar measures may follow in the UK soon. Versions of smoke-free cigarettes are already illegal in Australia, and banned in Canada, Brazil, Singapore and Thailand because side-effects haven't been tested. However, is that ever likely to happen? Will our government follow suit and try to stop the sale of e-cigs? From the comments of the Cabinet Office's behavioural insight team, better known as the Nudge Unit, this seems highly unlikely. The think tank wants to adopt the new technology because policy officials believe the rigid "quit or die" approach to smoking advice no longer works.

The Nudge Unit wants nicotine addiction to be managed to help smokers who otherwise won't quit: an approach the Unit believes could prevent millions of smoking deaths. Ten million people in the UK smoke, and smoking claims 80,000 lives a year. The think tank's first annual report published last year in the face of harsh criticism from the anti-smoking lobby, implemented a series of measures it believes could save thousands of lives a year, as well as £100m over the course of the next parliament. The Unit wants to explore and encourage new products that deliver nicotine to people's lungs but without the harmful toxins and carcinogens in tobacco smoke that kill.

The annual report reads: "It will be important to get the regulatory framework for these products right, to encourage new products. A canon of behaviour change is that it is much easier to substitute a similar behaviour than to extinguish an entrenched habit (an example was the rapid switch from leaded to unleaded fuel). If alternative and safe nicotine products can be developed which are attractive enough to substitute people away from traditional cigarettes, they could have the potential to save 10,000s of lives a year."

Experts have advised the government that the nicotine contained in some new, smoke-free e-cigarettes is no more harmful than caffeine in coffee. A Cabinet Office source said: "A lot of countries are moving to ban this stuff; we think that's a mistake." The unit is also keen to engage with those critics who believe its analysis and intervention in people's behaviour is "nanny statism".

David Halpern, the unit's head, speaking to the Guardian stated:

"As with seatbelts and the smoking ban, these ideas were unpopular at first but after a while when you explain them to people, they understand and say, 'Yeah, alright then.' We're confident about how well this can work, and the early trials have also made us much more confident about public acceptability. There's no doubt it can save many lives and hundreds of millions of pounds. In fact, our problem has become that we have so many inquiries from across Whitehall, we have to turn down many of the requests for help."

We live in a very judgemental world these days, and seem happy to criticise the behaviour of others based simply on the evidence presented to us by celebrity magazines and the latest tabloid scoop. Stacey Solomon sadly felt the full force of the press recently; her crime – well, she was seen smoking a cigarette whilst pregnant. The latest target of the likes of Heat and OK magazine appears to be pop stars, or more particularly female pop stars. These women are making the headlines, not for the quality of their music or the number of CDs they are selling, but simply because they too are continuing to commit the ultimate crime – smoking tobacco-based cigarettes. Adele, Rihanna and Miley Cyrus have all been spotted smoking recently, and the press are gunning for them because they’re viewed to be role models as well as super stars.

Now both Adele and Rihanna have had health problems recently. Adele had to have an operation on her throat to remove benign polyps from her vocal chords, and Rihanna’s voice is faltering because it is feared she smokes too much.  No doubt they know only too well that smoking tobacco-based cigarettes will do them long term harm, yet they still continue to smoke. Magazines regard such behaviour as unforgivable, but isn’t this criticism missing the point? The singers smoke because they are addicted to nicotine. All three singers have tried to stop smoking, but have found it impossible: the craving for nicotine is just too strong. Wouldn’t it be better for everyone if we cut then some slack, and let them get on with their lives in peace? Wouldn’t it be preferable to offer some kindly advice and words of encouragement as they try to beat the habit?

Try to taste any food with your nose pinched shut, then try the same food with your nose unobstructed and you'll see what we mean. It's only the sense of smell that can fully release all the variety of flavours of the food you eat, and open the palate up to tastes like sweet, sour, hot and spicy. Of course you won't have either of these issues when you use electronic cigarettes. Smoking tobacco deadens the sense of taste and smell. Using electric cigarettes however does not.

When you switch to e-cigs, one positive side effect is that the damaged cells on your tongue will soon start to recover their sense of taste. The tongue is an organ very much like the liver, and is capable of regenerating quickly. Last week’s budget news will have hit shell-shocked smokers for six. The Chancellor, George Osborne, announced that in an effort to discourage people from smoking tobacco-based cigarettes, he was raising the tax on tobacco products. The price of a packet of 20 cigarettes increased by 37 pence, and hand rolling tobacco increased by £1 for every 50 gramme packet.  Will this swingeing increase prompt smokers to quit? Well, it will certainly make them re-assess their options at the very least.

A packet of 20 cigarettes now costs roughly £6.50 depending on the brand. It’s estimated that the government takes roughly 87 percent of this cost in tax: so £5.66 is levied in tax on every packet, and this is fed into the treasury to theoretically pay for any cost the NHS might incur because of smoking. Cynics suggest that the hike in price owes more to the government trying to claw back some of the deficit, and that smokers and car users are paying the price of the previous administration’s profligacy. Whatever the real intention might be, the fact remains that smoking is now extremely expensive as well as being dangerous. Anyone smoking a packet of 20 cigarettes at today’s prices will pay £2,366 each year - £2,058 of which is a tax levy. If you were to continue smoking for 20 years, even at today’s prices, you would pay £47,320 for your pleasure, and a whopping £41,168 in tax. If that’s not an incentive to stop smoking, then what is?

Unfortunately, increasing the prices still fails to address one rather fundamental issue. The majority of smokers indulge their habit because they are addicted to nicotine and to the process of smoking. As long as this addiction persists, then smokers will continue to indulge regardless of the price. Some smokers want to quit, whilst others would like to continue to smoke, but do so in a safer and cheaper way. Fortunately, electronic cigarettes may hold the answer.

Electric cigarettes, like Freshcig’s e-cig, give smokers the nicotine hit they require, but in a safer way as they do not produce the toxic chemicals associated with tobacco-based cigarettes. What’s more they are on average 75 percent cheaper. To put that in perspective: if you’re one of the 20 a day smokers and you switch to e-cigarettes, then over the course of the next 12 months you would find yourself £1,775 better off. Over the course of 20 years that would translate into a £35,490 saving. Even if you choose to ignore the potential health benefits, then the cost saving alone is probably the biggest incentive you’ll ever need to make the switch. Just think what you could do with extra money instead?

It will probably come as no surprise to anyone with the slightest interest or experience of the plight of tobacco smokers who want to quit, to discover that offering free nicotine replacement patches or intensive counselling to smokers doesn’t work. Until recently many suspected this to be true, but a new study by the BMJ now suggests that this type of help has no discernable impact on confirmed smokers. What is actually needed is more proactive support for those who are really committed to giving up, or alternative therapies, like electric cigarettes for those who want to continue to smoke but in a safer way.

The Department of Health and the UK Centre for Tobacco Control Studies, in Nottingham, funded the study to find out if the support offered currently by the NHS Smoking Helpline could be improved. University of Nottingham researchers found that this additional support - on top of what is already offered, that is nicotine replacement therapies, had no effect on numbers giving up smoking. More than 2,500 smokers were followed up over a one year period. The smokers in the study were split into four groups.

The first group received standard support in the form of NHS Stop Smoking Services advice, letters, emails, text messages and access to a helpline. The second group received the same support but were also offered free nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) in the form of a 21-day supply of patches. The third group received "proactive support" in the form of standard support plus extra counselling sessions and messages from helpline staff, whilst the fourth received the same proactive support as the third group but with added free nicotine patches. Participants in the study were followed up one month and six months later.

Analysis of the data showed that six months after quitting, 18.9 percent of the 59 percent who were contacted said they had managed not to smoke. Nearly 80 percent of this group agreed to give a breath test for carbon monoxide to prove that they had stopped smoking. Some 18.2 percent of those given proactive support had quit, compared with 19.6 percent of those who did not receive this support. Overall, 17.7 percent of smokers who were offered the patches stopped smoking, compared with 20.1 percent of those not offered them. Even one month after setting a quit date, no significant differences were found between the groups. Overall,  the study found no significant difference in success rates between those people offered different types of supportive counselling, or between those given nicotine replacement therapy. The Department of Health has since said it will not now offer any extra services.

Professor Tim Coleman of the UK Centre for Tobacco Control Studies, who led the study, said the trial shed light on how telephone help lines could be used to help smokers who wanted to stop. However, the study also reinforces the need to find other ways of helping smokers to quit or switch to safer alternatives, and the need to find other ways of using quit lines to help smokers give up:

"On the basis of this study, giving out free nicotine patches and more intensive telephone counselling through the English National Quitline just doesn't seem to work.  It brings into sharp relief the need to find other ways of using quit lines to help smokers give up, and so to reduce the terrible effects smoking has on people's lives and the costly burden to the NHS."

However, Amanda Sandford, from Ash (Action on Smoking and Health, proffered a slightly more upbeat summation of the study, claiming:

"We are fortunate in having a wide range of treatments available in this country which can be tailored to the individual needs of the smoker. The important thing is that people wanting to stop smoking should get professional advice. The 17-20% quit success rate found in this study is far higher than when trying to stop smoking on your own."

Although the findings of the study are indeed interesting, if surprising, what it doesn’t do is address the issue of the large number of smokers who accept that tobacco smoking can be deadly, but have no desire to quit. What this group needs is a viable and healthier alternative. The most effective alternative therapy available is nicotine replacement therapy ingested via e-cigarettes. E-cigs only contain nicotine and not the other toxins and other harmful chemical found in traditional tobacco cigarettes.  

A fellow academic at Nottingham University, John Britten, professor of epidemiology has advised that the level of nicotine contained in many new smoke-free electronic cigarettes is no more harmful than the caffeine contained in coffee.  Britten, however, claimed that the lack of clarity in the electronic cig sector is holding back its potential and discouraging further investment:

“If a manufacturer makes a health claim for anything then it becomes a drug, and drugs have to be regulated with tight controls. The current nicotine replacements are sold as drugs; however, e-cigarettes contain nicotine but make no health claim and so can be sold freely, but with little or no information on safety or standards. What we're asking for is a regulation change to bring all nicotine products into a light-touch regime that will guarantee reasonable purity and safety standards but make them as available as cigarettes in a shop.”

Statistics can be manipulated to prove any point. That much is common knowledge. You only have to look at the political situation in the UK to appreciate that: one set of statistics can be used by both parties to prove a point when their policies are poles apart. So Freshcig is slightly uneasy accepting the findings of any new study. However, when a study is comprehensive and samples a large enough demographic, then we appreciate that we should be taking notice of it. Another electronic cigarette manufacturer commissioned a study ahead of National No Smoking Day to gather the views of smokers who had decided to quit and switch to electric cigarettes as a better alternative. 500 vapers were questioned about the reasons that made them decide to switch to e-cigs, and, more importantly, why they were committed to remaining smoke free. The study makes very interesting reading indeed.

According to the research, 69 percent of the respondents indicated that “health reasons” were the primary motivating factor that drove them to try electronic cigarettes in the first place. In addition, the survey then asked why electronic cigarettes continue to be appealing to users. In response 73 percent of the respondents cited the continued positive impact they were feeling on their overall health and wellbeing since making the switch. If nothing else these two sets of statistics clearly indicate that smokers are switching to e-cigs increasingly because of the perceived health benefits they bring. This very same ‘health motivation’ is confirmed online too, as demonstrated by the many user forums and blogs where e-cig users have switched from tobacco. These vapers happily and willingly testify to feeling better since making the switch and believed they had improved lung capacity and more overall energy.

The remaining 31 percent of survey respondents were motivated by other, but equally compelling factors. Factors like the significant reductions in outgoings, the ability to use electronic cigarettes in places where tobacco has been banned, and also the fact that e-cigarette users can avoid the smell associated with tobacco smoke. Among those who had chosen to completely switch over to e-cigs after initially trying them, equal numbers cited cost savings and the “freedom to vape anywhere” as the primary reason they continue to use these electronic devices. Interestingly on budget day, information released by Asda has shown that over the course of a lifetime a 30 a day smoker will spend roughly £111,000 indulging the habit. This will only get worse when the Chancellor adds another few pence to each packet today.

You may have seen the headlines in some of the newspapers over the last couple of weeks about the Tamworth employer who gave his employees free electronic cigarettes. Great capital was made by vaping supporters who proclaimed that this altruistic act clearly demonstrated that times are changing and smart employers are finally waking up to the fact that e-cigarettes are now acceptable and should be encouraged. Naturally, there were many on the other side of the divide that were highly critical of this apparent magnanimous gesture. These critics claimed that all the gesture did was give tacit approval to a product which they believe needs more stringent regulation. Moreover, they were at pains to point out that the act made the smoking of electric cigarettes acceptable and therefore encouraged other non smokers to take up the e-cig habit. Obviously such extreme opinions have drawn criticism from both doctors and advocates of electric cigarettes.

Whatever your views on this argument, the fact is the truth probably lies somewhere between the two extremes. Yes many enlightened employers probably do feel that electronic cigarette are a safer alternative for their employees, but any canny employer would also realise that encouraging employees to smoke e-cigs in preference to tobacco cigarettes would also lead to fewer ‘comfort’ breaks and therefore greater productivity.

One study has pointed out the fact that happy workers are more productive workers; if an employer allows workers to smoke e-cigarettes in the work place, productivity levels will improve. It’s been estimated that currently smokers are 20 percent less productive than non-smokers in a working environment because of the breaks they take to indulge their habit. In fact there was a report in the Daily Express a few weeks ago which suggested that research has confirmed that workers who take smoking breaks could be wasting as much as an hour a day of time that should be spent grafting. Furthermore, the report suggests that over the course of a year, smokers can waste as much as 5 weeks ‘skiving’ - in the paper’s eyes that is. Whether these figures stack up is debatable, but what is factually correct is that many tobacco smokers are less productive than their non smoking counterparts purely because they have to go outside to indulge their habit.

So, how can electric cigarettes make a workforce more productive? Well, there will no further need for cigarette breaks as employees can smoke e-cigs on the job. They, of course, will be a lot happier than being forced to go outside for a crafty drag. Because workers can smoke at their work stations, they are more likely to retain concentration levels and be able to focus on the task at hand. But what about fellow workers, you may wonder – how will they feel if someone next to them is puffing away on an electronic cigarette as they work? Well, e-cigarettes are not ignited and therefore produce no smoke or toxic chemicals. They are free from carcinogens and do not affect the health of other co-workers around the e-cig smoker. Now, we don’t know how you feel about that, but it sounds to us like a winner all round.

It’s a sad fact of life but some people can be easily led. You can tell them that black’s white and they’ll believe you. They simply agree with an argument they may have heard and accept the reasoning as the undisputed truth, even though they know deep down that they are only agreeing with an opinion, not the facts. Unfortunately this kind of skewed logic has recently entered the debate about the safety of the electronic cigarette. Some people have claimed that not only is the provenance of electric cigarettes debatable, but that there is scientific evidence available that points the finger at the link between the use of e-cigs and passive smoking. This causal link appears to be based solely on the fact that most authorities allow electronic cigarettes to be smoked in public places. In a statement to the Utah Department of Public Health last month, David Neville, an official for the department testified that ‘there’s no safe level of tobacco smoke’. Most of us know this already, and are aware of the many thousands of toxic chemicals and harmful substances that tobacco-based cigarettes contain. What’s important about the statement is the subtext, or the unwritten but understood message it transmits. What he actually means is that there isn’t even one single positive point that smoking can recommend. It is harmful and can ultimately kill, even in smaller doses. The implication of the statement is that confirmed smokers should be encouraged to look for safer alternatives and given all the necessary help to achieve this. Importantly they do not produce smoke either, as they are not combusted, so it’s impossible for them to release pollutants that will harm others and contribute to the levels of passive smoking.

The only by-product of electronic cigarettes is a water-based vapour, and this vapour consists primarily of propylene glycol, water, nicotine and flavouring. None of which are harmful to the human body. We all carry nicotine in our bodies anyway which we ingest through our food – even fervent non-smokers. Yes we’re all aware that the use of nicotine can be addictive. Smokers already know that, and are aware that the medical authorities believe it’s no more harmful than caffeine. Moreover, it’s not the nicotine that kills: it’s the chemicals and toxins in combusted tobacco.

So the next time you hear someone venting their spleen and making outlandish accusations, we’d suggest you just ignore it. Check the facts yourself and read the informed opinion. Electronic cigarettes will not harm those around you because they do not produce smoke. Ignorance may be bliss, but sometimes it can simply be deliberately misleading.  

Anyone who has ever smoked will tell you just how difficult it is to beat the habit. We know it takes willpower and determination and more than a little help from friends and family to pull it off. Until now there was no evidence to quantify just how difficult quitting was, but a new survey released by a major supermarket suggests that any smoker who finally stubs out cigarettes will have tried and failed 7 times before finally quitting.

The poll of Asda shoppers found that smokers who finally quit for good only managed to do so on the eighth time of trying. That was in spite of using therapies like nicotine replacement and receiving support and encouragement from their GPs and nursing practitioners. Any addiction is hard to beat, but it seems the addiction to tobacco-based products is probably the most difficult of all to overcome. NRT has its place, and can help some people to quit, but various studies have shown that the patches, gums and lozenges are, at best, only a short-term solution. Statistics released by various medical agencies have suggested that 8 in 10 ex-smokers using nicotine patches have started to smoke again within 3 months of putting out what they believed would be their final tobacco cigarette.

It should also be remembered that not every smoker wants to stop 'smoking'. Many enjoy the habit and the smoking experience. What they don't want is to put themselves in any unnecessary danger. Smokers are hardly ever out of the news these days. They come in for criticism from all quarters. The Express has released details of a report published by a UK electronic cigarette manufacturer which suggests that workers who take smoking breaks could be wasting as much as an hour a day of time that should be spent grafting. Furthermore, the report suggests that over the course of a year, smokers can waste as much as 5 weeks 'skiving'.

Whether the figures stack up or not is open to question. Some critics would suggest that to 'waste' an hour a day, you'd have to be a committed and heavy smoker. However, some employers have already taken action about this, and insisted that any employee taking a smoking break needs to clock off for the rest period, or make up the time at the end of the day. Few would argue with that principal as it seems fair to everyone – smokers and non-smokers alike. If there's a problem with these actions, it's that they only tend to deal with the symptoms, and never truly address the causes. They are essentially reactive measures. Wouldn't it be better if employers tried to address the issue of smoking, and try to understand why people smoke? If they did, they would then be in a better position to try to help their workforce to choose healthier and safer options like electric cigarettes. As e-cigs can be smoked in public spaces, there would then be no need for employees to leave their desks or take cigarette breaks.

Unfortunately, not all companies are quite so progressive or sympathetic. The much-trumpeted case of Standard Life's ban on the use of e-cigarettes on its premises has probably set the cause of electronic cigarette back by a few months. The approach is both short-sighted and illogical, but if nothing else it brought e-cigs to the public's attention which has to be a good thing. Fortunately, other major employers in Scotland have taken a more measured and enlightened view, and are positively encouraging members of their workforce to switch to this healthier alternative. Perhaps if more employers were this progressive, there wouldn't need to be clocking out periods and smoking breaks. Then all employees would be treated in exactly the same way, unless they are considering docking time for gossiping. Now, that really should worry some people.

Years of research have proved that there are undeniable links between smoking and cancer. Smoking is by far the most important preventable cause of cancer in the world. Smoking accounts for one in four UK cancer deaths, and nearly a fifth of all cancer cases. In the UK, smoking kills five times more people than road accidents, overdoses, murder, suicide and HIV all put together. Of all cancers, it is probably lung cancer that gets the greatest attention.

There is also some evidence that smoking could increase the risk of breast cancer.

Tobacco smoke contains at least 80 different cancer-causing substances. When you inhale smoke, these chemicals enter your lungs and spread around the rest of your body. Normally your lungs' air passages are lined with millions of tiny hairs called cilia. The cilia act like little brooms protecting the air tubes by sweeping dusts, tar, and other foreign materials gradually upward, like escalators, until they can be removed.  Every time a blast of tobacco smoke hits these cilia, however, they slow down, and soon stop moving at all. As a result, the trapped tars from the tobacco smoke begin boring into the cells lining the air tubes. Over time, this constant irritation turns some of the cells cancerous. This transformation takes many years, but once it begins, the cancer inexorably buries its way deeper into the lung. By the time it is discovered, it's usually too late.

Half of all smokers eventually die from cancer, or other smoking-related illnesses and a quarter of those smokers die in the middle years, between 35 and 69. So what action can you take to avoid becoming another victim of this silent killer? Well, the answer is simple. To avoid the risk of lung cancer people should stop smoking tobacco-based cigarettes. We wouldn’t have thought that cost-saving entered into the equation, though of course we could be wrong on that score. That depends on how much work is coming in.

We live in a society where we all appear to be obsessed with celebrity. We want to know what they’re doing all the time and what clothes they are wearing. But, at the end of the day, does any of that really matter? Surely if celebrities choose to switch to the safer alternative of e-cigarettes, shouldn’t we just congratulate them and let them get on with it? After all, it is a free world. Any person who chooses to make this switch, celebrity or not, deserves not just our congratulations, but also our support. They’ve made a brave decision, but a sensible one at that. They know e-cigs deliver precise and measured amounts of nicotine in a vapour mist to satisfy the cravings, but what they don’t deliver are carcinogens, toxins and deadly smoke. They know what electric cigarettes offer is a healthier alternative for smokers who wish to continue smoking in a safer way. If there’s a reason why celebrities are embracing the e-cigarette, then that’s it. No endorsements, no sly promotional backhanders: just common sense and a desire to live a safer lifestyle. So, let’s wish them well, and give then a break – especially Jimmy.

In case you weren’t aware, Wednesday 14 March, 2012, is National No Smoking Day. Those words will either send a chill down smoker’s spines, or will have them shaking their heads in resignation. It can often appear that everybody wants a piece of smokers: some will want to criticise you for your filthy habit and highlight all the physical and economic harm your behaviour is causing for the rest of the population: others will simply criticise you for being weak-willed. Smoking polarises opinion like no other issue. You’re either with them or against them, or at least it appears to be that way. The research demonstrated that there was no evidence of increased mortality, the formation of tumors, or atherosclerosis during the trials. The only thing it did show was that the weight of the rats did decrease as a result of the exposure to nicotine.

The research discovered that these four environmental factors contributed to the development of cancers.  Tobacco smoking was found to be by far the most significant factor, with the charity claiming that 60,000 cancer diagnoses per year in the UK are attributable to cigarettes and the smoking of tobacco. 23 percent of cancers in men, and 15.6 percent in women could be identified as smoking-related, equating to an overall total of nearly one in five cancers. In total, 40 percent of all cancers were found to be attributable to actions that are within our control. The report, by, has been welcomed as the most comprehensive review of cancer and lifestyle in the UK undertaken to date.

Professor Max Parkin, author of the report, commented on the study stating:

“Many people believe cancer is down to fate or ‘in the genes’ and that it is the luck of the draw whether they get it. Looking at all the evidence, it’s clear that around 40 per cent of all cancers are caused by things we mostly have the power to change.”

2007 was a defining year for the tobacco industry. The smoking ban transformed the lives of many individuals and businesses and made it illegal to smoke in public places and workplaces. If that’s not enough to convince employers, then one study has pointed out the fact that happy workers are more productive workers; if an employer allows workers to smoke e-cigarettes in the work place, productivity levels will improve. It’s been estimated that currently smokers are 20 percent less productive than non-smokers in a work environment because of the breaks they take to indulge their habit.

So how can electric cigarettes make a workforce more productive? Well, there will no further need for cigarette breaks as employees can smoke e-cigs on the job. They, of course, will be a lot happier than being forced to go outside for a crafty drag. Because workers can smoke at their work stations, they are more likely to retain concentration levels and be able to focus on the task at hand. But what about fellow workers, you may wonder – how will they feel if someone next to them is puffing away on an electronic cigarette as they work? Well, e-cigarettes are not ignited and therefore produce no smoke or toxic chemicals. They are free from carcinogens and do not affect the health of other co-workers around the e-cig smoker.

But will fellow employees be reassured about the facts relating to e-cigarettes? Well, that in large part depends on the electronic cigarette smokers themselves. Unless you’ve been hiding under a stone this weekend, then you can’t have helped but notice the face of Stacey Solomon splashed all over the news. The former X Factor contestant and Iceland figurehead was vilified by one Sunday newspaper for committing the world’s worst crime – well, in its eyes anyway. So what was this heinous crime? What dreadful thing had this young woman done to invoke the fury of a disgruntled nation?  Well, believe it or not, she was seen smoking a cigarette. Now granted the singer was approximately 7 months pregnant at the time, but none the less, you’d have thought from the ensuing furore that she’d stolen the crown jewels or something. Yes smoking tobacco is bad for you, and can potentially cause cancer and coronary heart disease. Moreover, smoking when pregnant can potentially cause miscarriages and respiratory illnesses in later life for an unborn child. There are numerous scientific papers to verify this information. No one would really condone what she did, but you have to ask yourself is it really anybody else’s business? What perhaps needs to be addressed is why she felt the need to smoke. What drove her to inhale the smoke from a tobacco cigarette whilst pregnant, rather than use the safer alternative of an electronic cigarette? Well, the answer is as simple as it gets – addiction.

The research demonstrated that there was no evidence of increased mortality, the formation of tumors, or atherosclerosis during the trials. The only thing it did show was that the weight of the rats did decrease as a result of the exposure to nicotine.

If you were of a mind to give up smoking permanently, then historically you were only faced with one stark alternative – cold turkey. You had to stop and stay stopped. Unfortunately the success of this was wholly dependent on your willpower and the determination to wean yourself off tobacco cigarettes. Naturally many smokers tried but failed to beat the habit. Then along came NRT therapies like nicotine patches, lozenges and gums: unfortunately electronic cigarettes had not reached the market at this stage. Nicotine patches seemed like the magic bullet at the time and were hailed as the quick fix solution which would help smokers finally quit for good. Sadly, it’s now an accepted fact that although nicotine patches can be effective in the early stages after stopping smoking, they become less effective as time passes. Statistics released by various medical agencies have suggested that 8 in 10 ex-smokers using nicotine patches have started to smoke again within 3 months of putting out what they believed would be their final tobacco cigarette.

So why is there an inherent problem with NRT therapy? Well it appears to be that although these therapies can provide the necessary nicotine that smokers require, they singularly fail to address the other issues that trouble reformed smokers. NRT therapies cannot replicate the smoking experience. Smokers miss the routine of smoking and often feel lost. Non smokers don’t know what to do with their hands when they’re no longer holding cigarette. Electric cigarettes on the other hand are capable of ticking all the necessary boxes. The main conclusions of the study were that the dramatic fall in the death rate was directly attributable to two factors: lifestyle changes and improvements in treatment. Fewer people now smoke traditional tobacco-based cigarettes, diets and lifestyles are now much healthier than they were eight years ago, and the NHS has invested substantial resources into coronary care research which has resulted in better treatment and more favourable outcomes.

One of the report’s authors, Professor Michael Goldacre, flagged up the reduction in smoking rates as a major factor in the overall reduced number f heart attack deaths:

“A big decline in smoking, people eating healthier fats, lower levels of blood pressure and more statins have all helped, while there were also big gains in treatment.”

One of the lifestyle factors that was analysed in detail in the study was tobacco smoking. The rate of smoking in the UK has fallen from 27 per cent in 2002 to 21 per cent in 2010. Some of this fall is undoubtedly attributable to the public smoking ban which into force during this period. However, the principle reason why more people quit tobacco-cigarettes was public education. We are all now well aware of just how dangerous smoking can be: smoking can lead to coronary heart disease and be the cause of strokes. Each tobacco cigarette contains tar, carbon monoxide, nitrosamines and benzene along with 7,000 other potentially toxic chemicals. Several major public health campaigns and health warnings on tobacco products have increased public awareness of the potential health risks associated with smoking.

Consequently, a considerable numbers of smokers in the UK have quit the tobacco habit, using either will power or NRT therapies. However, an estimated 1 million people have also given up tobacco by switching to the safer and healthier option of electric cigarettes or e-cigarettes. Although these e-cigs do contain nicotine which can be addictive, they do not contain any of the other harmful chemicals found in tobacco. Experts are now predicting that as the government has publically endorsed the use of the electronic cigarette, the number of UK citizens smoking tobacco-based products will fall even further in the coming years.

If we were to mention the date 24 march, 2012, would it mean anything to you? The answer unfortunately is probably not. We say unfortunately for a very good reason. That particular Thursday is World Vaping Day. It’s a day’s worth of activities to celebrate the success of the electronic cigarette, where hundreds of thousands of safe smokers and ex-smokers will be encouraging tobacco smokers who can’t or don’t want to quit to make the switch to the safer and healthier smoking alternative – the electric cigarette. The celebration is being held by the World Vaping Day Project Group, which comprises the following e-cigarette consumer associations: ECCA UK (UK), Stelda NL (Nederland), CASAA (USA), IGED (Deutschland), ATACA (Australia). According to a press release from the UK E-Cigarette Consumer Association (ECCA UK) World Vaping day aims to celebrate the success of the radical approach to smoking cessation and safety called tobacco harm reduction, or THR.  TRH has been proved to work extremely effectively and has already saved a huge numbers of lives. The success rate has been particularly noticeable in Sweden where the number of smokers has already been reduced by 40 percent after switching to smokeless tobacco (Snus). Sweden now has the lowest smoking-related mortality rate of any developed country, and it has achieved this milestone principally through the use of smokeless tobacco. In fact, this approach has been so successful that some are beginning to question the usefulness of other available anti-smoking therapies like NRT.

Sweden has the lowest lung cancer rate in Europe, and the lowest smoking death rate of any comparable country. Medical experts, however, argue that electric cigarettes are likely to work even better than Snus, and maintain that those countries that fully embrace the use of e-cigarettes should eventually be able to achieve an even better result than the 40 percent headline rate achieved in Sweden. Electronic cigarettes are devices that deliver nicotine without the tar and 7,000 other chemicals and carcinogens found in regular cigarettes. When a person inhales on an electronic cigarette, a liquid solution that can contain nicotine is heated producing a vapor; no combustion takes place, therefore no smoke is produced. The result is simply a water-based mist.

According to respected epidemiologists like Professor Carl Phillips and Professor Michael Siegel electronic cigarettes carry only a fraction of the risk of smoking cigarettes, and are no more harmful than drinking a cup of coffee. This statement has been backed up by the UK government, whose 'nudge unit' recently stated:

"There’s no doubt it [the electronic cigarette] can save many lives and hundreds of millions of pounds."

Dr J Nitzkin, Chair, Tobacco Control Task Force, AAPHP, the American Association of Public Health Physicians has recently stated:

 “E-cigarettes deliver the same nicotine found in the pharmaceutical products, with no more contamination by toxic substances than the pharmaceutical products already approved by FDA. If we get all tobacco smokers to switch from regular cigarettes to electronic cigarettes, we would eventually reduce the US death toll from more than 400,000 a year to less than 4,000, maybe as low as 400.”

After 20 years of extensive medical research, an eminent American doctor, Dr Brad Rodu D.D.S. has determined that although nicotine may well be addictive, it can be used safely and is effectively no more harmful than caffeine. Dr Rodu should know what he’s talking about after all: he’s the Professor of Medicine at Kentucky’s University of Louisville School of Medicine and also Senior Authority on Tobacco at the University’s Graham Brown Cancer Center.

The comprehensive research demonstrates conclusively the benefits of using electric cigarettes and other smokeless’ nicotine delivery devices, over traditional tobacco smoking. This new research backs up the information that the Royal College of Surgeons released over 10 years ago, which concludes that smokeless tobacco products are at least 1,000 times less harmful than smoking tobacco.  Dr Rodu concluded:

“Quit or die has been the brutal message delivered to some 45 million American smokers, as smoking tobacco contributes to 443,000 deaths a year (according to statistics from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention). The truth, however, is that total nicotine and tobacco abstinence is unattainable and unnecessary for many smokers.”

Fresh cig is pleased that such messages are finally being posted in the public arena. But what about the claims that prolonged nicotine ingestion via e-cigarettes can lead to oral cancer? Well, the good doctor has something to say about that as well.

Dr. Rodu’s research shows that the accusation is clearly incorrect. He concludes that not only is there no link between nicotine ingestion and oral cancer, but that people who smoke electronic cigarette statistically have about as much chance of dying from oral cancer as they do from a car accident. He bases this evidence on what has happened in Sweden over the last 50 years or so. Adult Swedish males are the heaviest smokeless tobacco users in Europe, yet surprisingly they have the lowest occurrence of lung cancer. The incidence of oral cancer is no greater in Sweden than anywhere else in Europe either.

All in all, this clearly sends out the message that those people who want to give up smoking tobacco-based products, but don’t necessarily want to give up smoking should switch to the superior alternative – electric cigarettes. Millions of people throughout the world smoke electric cigarettes. In fact in the U.S. alone there are estimated to be over 6 million vapers. Yet, this is the first reported incident of its type globally. Type exploding e-cigarettes into Google and you’ll just get the one result – Niceville, Florida. No one knows what brand of electronic cigarette or cigar the poor unfortunate man was using, and, more importantly, no one seems to have made any effort to find out. It now has been discovered that the injured gentleman had also made modifications to his electric cigarette. He was guilty of what is technically known as stacking, that is he was using several 3 volt CR 123 batteries stacked together much like you’ll see in a hand torch, so that he could get a better and more effective draw on his e-cig. The problem with any modification, particularly modifications to the atomiser in order to generate greater vapour production is that they are dangerous. Using several batteries stacked like this, without any effective safety circuitry is potentially disastrous, and can lead to explosions.

In spite of the behaviour of some companies and leading institutions, the UK government has stood firm and refused to bow to pressure from various anti-smoking lobbies. It has determined that electronic cigarettes can be smoked anywhere. So, as a smoker of an e-cig, you’re at liberty to smoke anywhere you like, be that in the pub, in a restaurant, on public transport, or even on an airplane. The vapour produced won’t harm anyone, or create any of the noxious of tobacco gases that many people dislike. So smokers of electronic cigarettes will no longer have to stand outside in the wind and the rain in order to satisfy their nicotine cravings.

The UK government has given its full backing to the use of electronic cigarettes as a healthier and safer substitute for tobacco smoking. It’s also made its position clear about where and when electric cigarettes can be used. There are no laws or by-laws which ban the use of e-cigarettes, unlike tobacco, so they can be safely and legally smoked in doors and in all public places. So, it comes as something of a surprise when one of the largest companies in Scotland bans its workers from using e-cigs at their desks. Standard Life, which employs 9,000 people in Edinburgh, state that electronic cigs,  which contain a nicotine solution but produce no smoke, breach their strict no-smoking rules. What’s even more bizarre is that the company insists that any of their employees who wish to use the safer tobacco-less product will in future have to go outside to get their fix, and stand with the tobacco smokers. Needless to say, this unprecedented action has caused some consternation north of the border.

Some of Scotland’s biggest public sector employers do allow the use of electronic cigarettes at work. Glasgow City Council confirmed that its staff are allowed to use the devices at their desks. Workers at Edinburgh City Council are also free to switch on their e-cigs after the authority confirmed it had “no policy”. Even Lloyds Banking Group – which includes Scottish Widows and HBOS – said that even though it is an anti-smoking organisation, it did not have a company policy on the use of electronic cigs. Standard Life, however, defended its stance on the basis of historical precedent rather than concerns over safety. A company spokesperson claimed:

“Standard Life has been a non-smoking company for over 20 years and we have no plans to introduce e-cigarettes. We are very active in the promotion of staff’s health and well being. We encourage and support staff if they decide to stop smoking through our occupational health department and the availability of on-site smoking cessation classes.”

Forrest, the pro-smoking organisation has accused the company of treating its staff like children. Director, Simon Clark claimed:

“It is utterly crazy. A lot of smokers use them to help them to cut down on smoking, or to try to quit. If companies don’t want them to go outside for extended periods then allowing them to smoke an electronic cigarette at their desk seems logical. It is completely ridiculous to ban them. If it’s because they look from a distance like cigarettes then they are basically treating workers like children.”

Prof John Britton, chairman of the Royal College of Physicians Tobacco Advisory Group, was equally at a loss to explain the company’s reaction, claiming e-cigarettes have the potential to save millions of lives:

“The likelihood is that smoking electronic cigarette is better than smoking tobacco. Electronic cigarettes have the potential to save lives. The concept of nicotine replacement is powerful and good.”

However, Standard Life remains unrepentant, and has received backing unsurprisingly from ASH Scotland. Chief executive of the anti-tobacco charity, Sheila Duffy, added:

“If a company wants to ban e-cigarettes in their offices that could help avoid the impression that smoking is normal or desirable thing. Tobacco is not a normal product – it kills half of its consumers if used as intended. E-Cigarettes are much less harmful than normal cigarettes and some people may find them useful in helping them to quit smoking, however there is still a lot of research to be done both on their safety and on their effectiveness as a stop-smoking aid.”

Smoking kills. That’s the stark warning issued by the government and the medical authorities. We’ve all known about this for years, and yet it is estimated that 21 percent of the UK’s adult population still lights up regardless. The latest figures from the Department of Health indicate that smoking kills at least 80,000 each year, and that the number is rising year on year. Now a leading smoking researcher has added to the debate and indicated that smokers who continue to light up after the age of 35 run the serious risk of dramatically reducing their lifespan.

Professor Robert west, a psychologist and Director of Tobacco Studies at the University of London’s Health Behavioural Research Centre made the comments on a podcast on the UCL website. The professor explained that for every year after the age of 35 that adults continued to smoke tobacco cigarettes, they risked shortening their life expectancy by three months. So for a 51 year old heavy smoker, you could effectively chalk off 4 years: that’s just up to today. By the time that smoker reaches 65, he or she could have sacrificed at least 7 and a half years from their projected lifespan.  If that’s not a sobering thought, what is?

The professor pointed out that despite the widespread availability of nicotine replacement therapies, 95 percent of those who try to quit will ultimately return to tobacco within a matter of weeks. The biggest problem for most smokers is getting through the first few weeks after quitting, and learning to deal with the withdrawal symptoms. As NRT is obviously proving to be ineffectual, the professor urged smokers to look to other alternative solutions like electronic cigarettes. If you were ever looking for a reason why you should consider giving up tobacco cigarettes, or at the very least switching to a safer and healthier alternative like electronic cigarettes, then look no further than the new study released by Australian scientists which analysed the time it took for the effects of eating sugary foods, salty meals, drinking coffee and alcohol and smoking cigarettes to impact on the body.  The study discovered that within half an hour of drinking coffee, blood flow to the skin and organs decreased. However, smoking was found to have the fastest and most detrimental effects on the body.

Inhaled tobacco cigarette smoke reaches the lungs within seconds, causing blood pressure to rise and the heart to work harder. One chemical within cigarettes that was found to be particularly fast acting was carbon monoxide. Unsurprisingly carbon monoxide effectively reduces the amount of oxygen the red blood cells can carry around the body, meaning less oxygen is delivered to your body's organs after smoking a cigarette. The body's oxygen levels only return to normal after 6 hours of smoking. Carbon monoxide is found at a level 600 times more concentrated in cigarette smoke than is considered a 'safe' concentration in the air. It’s common knowledge that tobacco cigarette smoking is bad for health, and can in time lead to potentially fatal illnesses. What wasn’t perhaps as well known was the speed at which some of the harmful chemicals affected the body. Now we’re armed with this information, we should be in a much better position to make informed choices about our habits.

E-cigarettes do not contain carbon monoxide. In fact, electronic cigarette don’t contain any of the 7,000 harmful chemicals normally found in tobacco cigarettes, like tar, benzene, nitrosamines, formaldehyde and hydrogen cyanide. It’s these chemicals that cause the damage, not the nicotine. The worst culprit is the tar produced by tobacco cigarettes. This toxic substance is linked to numerous cancers, such as stomach cancer, and cancer of the bladder, lungs, throat and mouth. Those people who give up smoking tobacco cigarettes are less likely to suffer a heart attack than those who continue with the habit. Electric cigarettes are non-carcinogenic, and are therefore infinitely better and safer for your health.  All e-cigs contain is nicotine which is heated to produce a vapour. It’s as simple as that.

But is nicotine safe? Well according to scientists and medical professionals the answer is yes. Many doctors believe that nicotine is no more harmful than caffeine. A two year controlled study has shown that nicotine alone does not have any deleterious effects on health. In the study, rats were subjected to an amount of nicotine equal to twice the amount found in the bloodstreams of heavy smokers. The research demonstrated that there was no evidence of increased mortality, the formation of tumors, or atherosclerosis during the trials. The only thing it did show was that the weight of the rats did decrease as a result of the exposure to nicotine.

The lady and one other member of her party had been enjoying an electric cig, when she was approached by a member of the bar staff. When she refused to stop using the e-cig she was told to leave the premises by a manager. He claimed that other diners did not approve of the behaviour, and claimed that allowing the use of electronic cigarette in public spaces merely encouraged tobacco smokers to light up as well. It was this that so enraged her regional MEP. Mr Bloom said the action of the manager was irresponsible, illegal and, most worryingly of all, discouraged the type of behaviour that the government was trying to positively encourage; that is stopping smoking tobacco cigarettes and encouraging people to use safer e-cigarettes instead.

In a letter to the newspaper, Mr Bloom berated the manager’s behaviour, stating:

“It seemed to me to be a wonderful invention, the electric cigarette. Old age pensioners and youngsters no longer had to stand out in the freezing cold smoking real cigarettes. A major step forward, I believe.  Now it would appear that (deleted) individuals do not know the difference between a real or electric cigarette (The Press, January 31). So be it. I suggest such establishments are avoided.”

What so annoyed the MEP was the fact that it is perfectly legal to smoke electronic cigarettes in all public spaces. E-cigarettes contain no tobacco or harmful chemicals, and only release harmless water vapour. The government has been keen to support the growing use of electric cigarettes. They do no harm to the user, nor to those around them. They are socially acceptable and are regarded as a much safer alternative to tobacco smoking by the Royal College of Surgeons.

A spokesman for the Department of Health has since confirmed that it is legal to smoke e-cigs as they only emit water vapour and are not ignited. However, interestingly he also added that it is up to the discretion of the property owner whether electric cigarettes are allowed: a statement which flies in the face of government policy advice.  How long before Mr Bloom challenges that contention?

The UK government’s ‘Nudge Unit’, also known as the Cabinet Office’s behavioural insight team, wants to encourage the use of smokeless nicotine cigarettes, or e-cigs. Electronic cigarettes are banned in many countries around the world, yet the Unit believes widespread adoption of the product would reduce the numbers killed in the UK by smoking and smoking-related diseases significantly. The Nudge Unit wants to wants a wider adoption of this new electronic cigarette technology. Policy officials believe the rigid "quit or die" approach to smoking advice no longer works with the people that matter, and rather than helping people quit the smoking habit, the antiquated policy actually only actually re-enforces habitual behaviour. The Unit wants nicotine addiction to be managed in order to help the smokers who otherwise won't quit.  The new approach it believes could prevent millions of smoking deaths. Currently ten million people in the UK smoke, and smoking is estimated to claim up to 80,000 lives a year.

Although the Nudge Unit has been severely criticised in some quarters, it still believes that by implementing a series of measures like nudging people to opt out of organ donation, rather than opting in, and encouraging products like e-cigarettes that deliver nicotine to people's lungs but without the harmful toxins and carcinogens in tobacco smoke that kill, it could save thousands of lives a year, as well as £100m over the course of the current parliament. In its annual report at the end of last year, the Unit stated:

“It will be important to get the regulatory framework for these products right, to encourage new products. A canon of behaviour change is that it is much easier to substitute a similar behaviour than to extinguish an entrenched habit (an example was the rapid switch from leaded to unleaded fuel). If alternative and safe nicotine products can be developed, like electronic cigarettes, which are attractive enough to substitute people away from traditional cigarettes, they could have the potential to save 10,000s of lives a year.”

The Cabinet Office has taken advice from medical experts like John Britten, professor of epidemiology at Nottingham University. These experts have advised that the level of nicotine contained in many new smoke-free electronic cigarettes is no more harmful than the caffeine contained in coffee.  Britten, however, claimed that the lack of clarity in the electronic cig sector is holding back its potential and discouraging further investment:

“If a manufacturer makes a health claim for anything then it becomes a drug, and drugs have to be regulated with tight controls. The current nicotine replacements are sold as drugs; however, e-cigarette contain nicotine but make no health claim and so can be sold freely, but with little or no information on safety or standards. What we're asking for is a regulation change to bring all nicotine products into a light-touch regime that will guarantee reasonable purity and safety standards but make them as available as cigarettes in a shop.”

The Medicine and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is looking into approving these electronic cigarette devices for use. If it finds in their favour, then the government is likely to push for them to be placed prominently in shops alongside tobacco cigarettes, where they would be sold at a cheaper rate.

As we’re drawing towards the end of the month, we thought it only fair to have a look back at January. For most people the start of January signals only one thing, and that’s New Year’s resolutions. We all vow to do something, or to give up what we consider to be a bad or harmful habit. The problem is few of us actually achieve what we set out to. As endorsements go, they don’t come much better than this. These were words spoken on ITV’s This Morning programme earlier this week and refer to the electronic cigarette. Currently 9 million British people smoke. However, the College also states that:

“The use of NRT and e-cigarettes in any circumstance, is in many orders of magnitude safer than smoking.”

This toxic substance is linked to numerous cancers, such as stomach cancer, and cancer of the bladder, lungs, throat and mouth. Those people who give up smoking tobacco cigarettes are less likely to suffer a heart attack than those who continue with the habit.

Are electronic cigarettes safe?

Although nicotine is addictive, it does not in itself do any harm to the body, unlike tobacco. Electronic cigarettes satisfy the nicotine cravings by releasing nicotine vapour, but because they do not contain tobacco or combust they do not produce harmful and toxic smoke. A two year controlled study has shown that nicotine alone does not have any deleterious effects on health. In the study, rats were subjected to an amount of nicotine equal to twice the amount found in the bloodstreams of heavy smokers. The research demonstrated that there was no evidence of increased mortality, the formation of tumors, or atherosclerosis during the trials. The only thing it did show was that the weight of the rats did decrease as a result of the exposure to nicotine.

“Enough is enough. I saw my friend had an e-cigarette and he'd cut down dramatically so I thought I'd give it a go," said Leith. "For the last 5 years I have been an all or nothing smoker. Since working abroad and falling into the trap of 'straight' cigarettes I have feebly failed to quit twice.”

The research was based on the study of 40 hardened smokers who were recruited to test the effectiveness of the electronic cig in aiding smoking cessation. None of the 40 smokers recruited had a desire to give up and volunteered more out of curiosity rather than purpose. The smokers were each given an e-cig as an aid to help them kick the habit. Half of the smokers studied have now quit the habit and have stayed off tobacco cigarettes since. So the obvious question to ask is why? The answer it seems is all about attitudes and emphasis. Giving up tobacco smoking has always been seen as definitive: you smoked, then you quit for life. If you wanted to break the habit, you had to give up totally. Cigarette smoking is harmful and can potentially cause cancer and increases the likelihood of both heart attacks and strokes. The nudge unit's first annual report was published last week, stating that by encouraging people to smoke the electronic cigarette or e cig as they are sometime know, the government could save thousands of lives as well as £100 million over the next few years. They want nicotine addiction to be managed to help smokers who otherwise won't quit.

Ten million people in the UK smoke cigarettes and it claims 80,000 lives a year.  The unit does not believe the current deterrent of "quit or die" is having the same impact as it did years ago. The unit now wants to explore the electric cigarette or e cig that deliver nicotine to people but without the harmful toxins and carcinogens in tobacco smoke that kill.

The report reads: "It will be important to get the regulatory framework for these products right, to encourage new products. A canon of behaviour change is that it is much easier to substitute a similar behaviour than to extinguish an entrenched habit (an example was the rapid switch from leaded to unleaded fuel). If alternative and safe nicotine products can be developed which are attractive enough to substitute people away from traditional cigarettes, they could have the potential to save 10,000s of lives a year."

The unit's head David Halpern, told the Guardian newspaper: "As with seatbelts and the smoking ban, these ideas were unpopular at first but after a while when you explain them to people, they understand and say, 'Yeah, al-right then.'

"A year in," Halpern added, "we're much more confident about how well this can work, and the early trials have also made us much more confident about public acceptability. There's no doubt it can save many lives and hundreds of millions of pounds. In fact, our problem has become that we have so many inquiries from across Whitehall, we have to turn down many of the requests for help."

Experts have advised the government that the nicotine contained in the electronic cigarette or e cig is no more harmful than caffeine in coffee. A Cabinet Office source said: "A lot of countries are moving to ban this stuff; we think that's a mistake."

The Medicine and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) are looking into approving the electronic cigarette for use. If the MHRA finds in the favour of the e cig, the government are likely to push for them to be placed prominently in shops alongside tobacco cigarettes, where they would be sold at a cheaper price.

A university in Auckland are in the process of researching whether the electronic cigarette, which contains only nicotine without all the other chemicals associated with normal cigarettes, can help smokers give up tobacco.

The study in to e cig is said to be trailed on 650 people in New Zealand. Chris Bullen of the university said-

“We think at the end of this study, the evidence on the electronic cigarette will suggest one way or the other, do they help people quit smoking,”

Dean Smith a cigarette smoker for 30 years says “I haven't touched a normal cigarette in over a year and a half, so I have all the benefits of being a non-smoker but I'm still enjoying all the sensations of smoking with an electric cigarette.”

This is the largest study in the world to take place to see if the electric cigarette is effective in helping people give up.
