In case you weren’t aware, Wednesday 14 March, 2012, is National No Smoking Day. Those words will either send a chill down smoker’s spines, or will have them shaking their heads in resignation. Well, a report from Cancer Research UK has finally managed to lay that myth to rest, and laid the blame squarely on the shoulders of the body’s exposure to harmful environmental risk factors like smoking, alcohol consumption, unhealthy diets and obesity.

2007 was a defining year for the tobacco industry. The smoking ban transformed the lives of many individuals and businesses and made it illegal to smoke in public places and workplaces. Pubs, restaurants and nightclubs smell more pleasant, and revellers can return from an evening out without their clothes reeking of stale tobacco smoke.

What dreadful thing had this young woman done to invoke the fury of a disgruntled nation?

The number of fatal heart attacks in the UK has fallen by a half as people adopt healthier lifestyles and more smokers either quit the habit or switch to the safer and healthier electronic cigarette. The study, conducted by researchers at Oxford University and published in the British Medical Journal, found that the death rate involved when patients had suffered heart attacks was 50% less in men and 53% less in women in 2002 than in 2010.

If we were to mention the date 24 march, 2012, would it mean anything to you? The answer unfortunately is probably not. We say unfortunately for a very good reason. The prolonged use of nicotine is damaging to the human body and can lead to cases of oral cancer. That’s just one of the sweeping generalisations levelled at the use of electronic cigarettes. Such statements are never actually backed up by medical evidence, and are usually based on random and selective anecdotal evidence.
